Beyond Clickbait: A Conversation about Social Media Engagement

Social media provides both educational and marketing opportunities for cultural institutions. But staffing, institutional history, and size present challenges that make it difficult to optimize these platforms. Join us for a panel with James Claiborne (African American Museum in Philadelphia), Caitlin Mahoney (Philadelphia Museum of Art), and Patrick Wittwer (Visitor Experiences Group) as they consider the following:

  • How organizations can create sustaining relationships with the public via social media

  • How older institutions can adopt a tone audiences expect in social media feeds but still aligns the mission and history

  • Strategies for smaller organizations to maintain one voice when multiple employees are posting, or maintain a consistent presence when managed by one staff member with multiple duties

Tickets: $10 for members, $15 for non-members. Light refreshments will be provided.

Panelist Bios:

James Claiborne / African American Museum in Philadelphia

Since 2015, James Claiborne has served as the Public Programming Manager for the African American Museum in Philadelphia. Prior to coming to AAMP, James served as the Community Engagement Manager for the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance, and Editor for Visit Philadelphia’s Philly 360 campaign. Currently, he serves on the Executive Committee for the board of the Philadelphia Cultural Fund, and as an Adjunct Professor at Drexel University.

Caitlin Mahoney / Philadelphia Museum of Art

Caitlin Mahony is currently the Manager of Digital Marketing at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. She holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing from Loyola University Maryland and excels at creating engaging content and making art relatable to a wide range of audiences.

Patrick Wittwer/ Visitor Experience Group

Patrick Wittwer has been working in the Philadelphia museum scene since he was 17. Patrick accidentally began social media marketing to compensate for having no marketing budget while serving as Director of the Elfreth's Alley Museum. These days, Patrick is one of the Museum Council Vice Presidents, serves as the Marketing Chair for the Visitor Experience Group, and works in Wells Fargo's Heritage Marketing and Museums department. Outside of the museum world, Patrick enjoys travel, photography, pizza, and is likely the biggest Muppet fan you'll ever meet.
